This project began after one of the pilot library literacy programs identified a need to modify their workshops for new tutors. The organization was seeing 60% of potential tutors who started the Tutor Training Workshop drop out prior to completing the workshop. With a completion rate of 40%, they knew that something needed to change.

Three partner libraries were involved in developing, pilot testing and evaluating training for new tutors based on the Inspired learning Model (ILM). Each of the partner library literacy programs, one small, one medium, and one large program spread out across the southern half of the state, reviewed their own tutor training and realigned the workshop with the ILM philosophies. Incorporating the Inspired Learning ModelTM into a modified Tutor Training would help make the training the best that they could make it for their program. Activities to enhance Tutor Training Workshops and help tutors feel comfortable as they begin their tutoring were to be reviewed.

Desired primary outcomes during the initial project year included improved tutor completion rates for the initial training, improved percentage of tutors submitting accurate and timely monthly reports, and improved tutor longevity with the program.

The ILPELS Project team believes that a more effective pre-service training, coupled with timely and targeted responses to requests for guidance, will lead to a longer and more satisfying relationship between tutors and their adult learners, while improving the quality of library literacy services.
