Carey is the Literacy Specialist for Butte County Library. She has been involved with library literacy programs since 1990 when she volunteered to be a tutor for The Reading Program (Santa Clara County Free Library), and later became a staff member discovering a passion for working closely with adult learners.

In 1993, Carey began working with Project READ, Redwood City Public Library and it was there she feels her work really took wing. Over the next nine years her involvement ranged from managing the adult, Families For Literacy, and inmate programs, to spending weekends with learners and tutors building floats (award winning!) for the 4th of July parade, and skydiving with fellow staff members in a celebratory leap for literacy!

After relocating from the Bay Area to Orland, a small farming town near Chico, Carey feels fortunate to be able to continue working in support of the Library in a field where lifelong learning for all is so valued and encouraged.

In 2002, Carey was honored with Project READ’s prestigious Fueling the Fire of Hope award. She continues to support Project READ by serving as president of the Redwood City Friends of Literacy. She is currently president of the Northern California Literacy Coalition, vice president for the Butte Literacy Council, Literacy Section representative on the California Library Association Legislative Committee and is a California Literacy Inc. MEDAL fellow.

Carey is grateful for the many opportunities and experiences she has gained through the years and deeply cherishes the rich friendships and memories. A graduate of Fresno State, she enjoys going new places and loves soaking up the sun!
