Karen Williams has been the director of the Stanislaus Literacy Center for the past 9 years.  She moved to this area from Kansas with her minister husband and three sons now ages 24, 21 and 19.  Since coming to California, she has been able to watch and participate in the development of the Literacy Center which has grown from a $68,000 per year budget and 2 employees in 1996 to the this year’s $850,000 budget and 50 employees.  She was also picked as one of seven Adult Literacy directors in California for the MEDAL fellowship for Manager Executive Directors and Leaders of Adult Literacy offered by the state literacy organization, California Literacy.  She was also chosen as the 2005 Literacy Network’s recipient of the Jean and Clyde Dunlap Award for her outstanding contribution to literacy.
